What Akeredolu Said About Killing In Shasha Market

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has described as despicable the k!llings in Shasha market in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.

Recall that three people were reportedly killed in a clash between Hausa traders and the Yorubas at Shasha Market.

It was learned that the disturbing event led to the destruction of shops and properties by hoodlums who took advantage of the clash. It was reported that residents were forced to flee the troubled area around 5:30 pm.

Some lucky residents were said to have hurriedly picked a few clothes with them as they were unsure whether the violence would not escalate. Confirming the report to newsmen, police operatives revealed that one person died in the attack, contrary to the claims by traders.

Consequently, Governor Seyi Makinde ordered the closure of the market with immediate effect and declared a curfew.

In a statement on Saturday, Akeredolu condemned the crisis between the two ethnic groups, adding that the violence is against the values of the Yoruba.

The chairman of the South-west Governors Forum asked those involved to resist taking the law into their own hands and obey all security agentd.

He also urged all indigenes of the South West to sustain the value of hospitality which they are known for and enviable virtues by remaining law-abiding.

He said: “We note with deep concern, the most unfortunate and avoidable orgy of violence in Shasha, Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital….it becomes very compelling for me to address ALL RESIDENTS, in particular, the Yoruba speaking people of our dear Region as regards recent happenings bordering on security.

“Without doubt, the situation we have found ourselves as a people is most despicable and contends violently against, and abhorrently at variance with the values and hospitality for which our people are known.

“We have been known for thoroughness. We have identified with legality over the centuries; and our ethos as a civilised breed of people is such that we do not identify with lawlessness, not even illegality.

“In this regard, we urge all indigenes of the South West to sustain these values and enviable virtues by remaining law-abiding. Our resolve in this direction is not a sign of weakness; it is indeed, the strongest of all.

“In particular, while I understand the height of provocation in the light of recent happenings as regards Shasha, Ibadan, I, alongside my other brother Governors in the Region are against the willful appropriation of Laws unto hands. We do not support violence and in particular, brigandage, jungle justice, and unnecessary self-help.”
