Jigawa To Establish 216 Mass Literacy Centres
The Jigawa Government has approved the establishment of 135 basic literacy and 81 post literacy centres across the state as part of measures to boost literacy in the state.
The Executive Secretary of the Agency for Mass Education, Dr Abbas Abubukar, made this known on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse.
Abubakar said that the centres would be established across the 27 local government areas of the state, with eight in each local council.
The executive secretary added that each of the local council was expected to train 50 persons.
According to him, the centres would be sited in remote areas, prison yards and women centres.
Abubukar said that the measure was part of the government’s effort to improve literacy rate in the state from the current 56 per cent to 60 per cent by the end of December, 2017.
“The total number of learners will be 10,800 and these 10,800 will be trained before the end of December, 2017,” he said.
The executive secretary further told NAN that the beneficiaries would be certificated at the end of the programme.
He also said 3,000 members of the vigilance group in the state were currently receiving adult literacy training organised by the agency.
Abubakar said that regular inspection would be carried out to ensure the success of the programme.
He urged the people of the state, especially rural dwellers, to take advantage of the initiative by enrolling in the centres. (NAN).
