Ex Premier League Referee Speaks On Newcastle’s Winning Goal Against Arsenal

Former Premier League referee, Mark Clattenburg, has said Newcastle United’s winning goal against Arsenal should have been ruled out by VAR.

VAR officials allowed Anthony Gordon’s second-half goal stand, as the Gunners’ unbeaten start to the Premier League season ended.

The goal was subjected to a four-minute VAR check, in which the officials deemed the ball had not crossed the line, Joelinton didn’t foul Gabriel Magalhaes and Gordon wasn’t offside.

Mikel Arteta called the decision an “embarrassment” and a “disgrace” in his post-match press conference.

Clattenburg, writing in his MailOnline column, said:

“The whole goal didn’t feel right and if there was a moment to disallow it then it was this as Joelinton clearly pushed Gabriel.”

He also pointed out Gordon’s goal should not have been ruled out for offside.

“This happens a lot where players block the cameras, meaning the VAR couldn’t draw the lines and conclusively rule out the goal for offside.
