Corps Member Awards A Scholarship To A Student From His Allowance
A youth corps member serving in Rivers state has been hailed a ”superhero” after it was revealed that he offered a fully funded scholarship to an indigent secondary school student, Miss Wealth Sokari, in his place of primary assignment.
The NYSC member named, Bright Martins Ekong, a graduate of Pure Chemistry from the University of Calabar (UNICAL), donated his 10-month allowance towards the course.
According to Ekong, the initiative was meant to give back to the society by empowering miss Sokari, a brilliant 12-year-old daughter of a widow who had been struggling to round up from school in Bukuma village, Degema LGA in Rivers state.
One of Ekong’s coursemates at the University of Calabar stated that he was not surprised when he heard the story of Ekong donating his allowances because he has always been a giver and showed kindness to many of his colleagues back when they were students.
Speaking to journalists, Ekong, an indigene of Akwa Ibom State, explained that he took the decision to donate his allowances as scholarship to the student to ensure that Miss Sokari, who is the brightest student in the public school, doesn’t drop out of school given her mother’s circumstance and also to make his contribution towards educational development, which he was also a beneficiary.
