PSquare Paved The Way For Afrobeat Not D’banj or 2face
In recent years, there has been a lot of discussion about the origins and evolution of Afrobeat, a music genre that has been gaining global recognition and popularity.
While some have argued that artists such as D’banj and 2face were the pioneers of this genre, others have pointed to P-Square as the true trailblazers. In this article, we will explore why P-Square not D’banj or 2face opened the way for Afrobeat.
P-Square, consisting of identical twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye, burst onto the Nigerian music scene in the early 2000s with their unique blend of R&B, hip-hop, and traditional African rhythms.
Their debut album, “Last Nite,” released in 2003, was a commercial success and paved the way for their subsequent albums, which would go on to become some of the best-selling records in Nigerian music history.
One of the reasons why P-Square deserves credit for opening the way for Afrobeat is their ability to fuse different genres of music in a way that was both innovative and accessible. While D’banj and 2face were also experimenting with blending different styles of music, P-Square‘s approach was more cohesive and polished. Their music had a distinct sound that was instantly recognizable, yet flexible enough to incorporate new influences and trends as they emerged.
Another factor that sets P-Square apart from other Nigerian musicians of their era is their international appeal. Unlike D’banj and 2face, whose success was primarily limited to the African continent, P-Square achieved worldwide recognition and popularity.
They were the first Nigerian musicians to perform at the Apollo Theater in New York City, and their music videos were regularly featured on MTV Base, a music channel that catered to audiences across Africa and Europe.
P-Square‘s success also paved the way for other Nigerian musicians to follow in their footsteps and achieve global fame. Artists such as Davido, Wizkid, and havBurna Boye all cited P-Square as an influence and inspiration, and have built upon the foundation that P-Square laid with their innovative approach to music.
