Former Minister of Finance in Nigeria, Dr (Mrs) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Monday, 15th February was officially declared the new Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The development brought to end months of activities in determining who takes over from Roberto Azevêdo who was the sixth Director-General of the WTO but stepped down in 2020, a year before the expiration of his second term in office.

On Monday, Okonjo-Iweala was eventually declared as the new WTO boss, becoming the first African and first woman to head the international organization.

Her term starts on the 1st of March 2021.

After her emergence, she wrote on her Twitter that it is done and thanked all WTO members for choosing her, but warned those concerned that it won’t be business as usual as she is ready to tackle the challenges of WTO.

She wrote: “It is done! Thank you @WTO members for finalizing my election today and making history. In the 73 years of GATT and WTO, honored to be First Woman and First African to lead. But now the real work begins. Ready to tackle the challenges of WTO. Forget Business as usual!”

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Okonjo-Iweala on her emergence as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The President in a statement on Monday by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Garba Shehu said her emergence has brought joy and more honour to Nigeria as a country.
