NASU and SSANU strike to persist following fruitless meeting with FG panel

A meeting convened by the federal government renegotiation panel and the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions ended in deadlock as the parties failed to reach an agreement.

The renegotiation committee chaired by the Pro-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Prof. Nimi Briggs, and inaugurated on March 7, 2022, was given three months (which elapsed on June 6) to conclude the renegotiation with the four university unions and send the report to Federal Government.

The National Vice-President of SSANU, Dr. Abdussobur Salaam, while speaking with newsmen said the panel met only once with SSANU in April 2022, and nothing tangible was discussed at the meeting.

He added that the committee doesn’t seem to be sure of its duties and may not be able to deliver on its responsibilities due to its slow pace of work.

The committee is expected to submit its report to the Federal Government this week or get an extension.
