#EndSarsProtest: What Should Be Known – Akinshola (Deputy Coordinator, Nans Southwest)

It is worth the euphoria that the youths had come out of their shells to exercise their constitutional rights in expressing their displeasure regarding the inhumane acts violating the fundamental rights of citizens. We are particularly making mentions of our full and unalloyed support to this movement; it is justifiable and must be considered answerable.

By the objectives of the protest, the presidency must seek to duly tackle the security challenges within the country, it is mandatory for the cause of progress. The governors of each state should own up to their responsibilities in attending to critical situations exhibiting itself in their respective states. It is high time they stopped playing deaf ears to the cries and wants of their citizens.

It is also important to condemn the act of vandalization of properties. The adherence to a democratic act of exercising the constitutional rights to freedom of expression does not conform to the burning of houses, cars and properties. It must be adequately understood that such acts are not in affiliation with the peaceful agitation the protest is targeted at. It is on this note we would like to address and beckon to those involved to desist from such as it looms danger to residences closer to affected areas. It also renders gainfully employed citizens jobless due to the media, transport, financial, educational places that had fallen victim to this deformity.

The killing of protesters at the Lekki Tollgate is an undemocratic act, one which violates the fundamental right to life. The protest at Lekki was the most peaceful protest across the nation and as such, killing its protesters or any youths at all is an unjustifiable act. To this, President Muhammadu Buhari is called upon to address the public on this matter as his silence is considered irrational and doesn’t show concern to the present situation. He must come out of his comfort zone to address the situation for the cause of concern and implementation of our demands.

The protest is an objective one, none of our youths is to be maimed, injured or killed for expressing our displeasure peacefully and according to our constitutional rights. We deserve to speak and we deserve to be heard.
