Claims Against Security Forces Untrue, Presidency Tackles Ortom
The claim made by Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, that President Muhammadu Buhari had instructed security personnel not to act against aggressive Fulani herders has been debunked by the Presidency.
Garba Shehu, a senior special assistant to the president for media and publicity, declared that top security officials wouldn’t divulge highly sensitive material to the governor.
“In a recent interview, the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, claimed that high ranking security personnel had informed him personally that President Buhari had ordered security forces not to move against the Fulani herdsmen responsible for recent viol3nce. These ridiculous claims are patently untrue.
“If he is as brave as he claims to be, let him name names. Let him name the military personnel who told him this story or forever shut up.”
Speaking further, the Presidency expressed disappointment in Governor Ortom, saying “it is sad that Ortom felt the need to propagate such a divisive lie given that he describes himself in the same interview as a child of God who believes in being lawful and respects the Nigerian constitution.”
Shehu further expressed that politicians should be working to unite Nigerians during this time of increased unrest rather than putting the nation at risk of violence by dishonestly attempting to further divide the country along r@c!al or religious lines.
