ASUU Condemns Dismissal Of Members In Kogi, Lagos

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kano State Zone, on Friday, not only described as unconstitutional but also condemned the dismissal of its members at the Kogi State University and Lagos State University.

In a statement, the coordinator of ASUU in the zone, Prof. Mohammad Lawan, also called for the immediate reinstatement of their colleagues, whom he said were unjustly sacked by the two universities.

The union said the sacking of the union’s chairperson at LASU, Dr. Isaac Oyewumi, and his deputy, Dr. Adebowale Suenu, over allegations that they demanded money via an unnamed agent to process student’s results during the 2011 academic year was unfair.

Lawan also condemned the purported proscription of the union at the Kogi State University by the state governor, Yahaya Bello.

He noted that the charter which established the union’s KSU branch belonged to ASUU and not the state government.

The statement also condemned the forceful ejection of the union’s KSU members from their residences, as well as denial of access to the university’s premises.

Lawan lamented that despite peace moves by the ASUU, the LASU and KSU management had continued to act with impunity, “which is against the constitutional provisions of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as well as against all extant national and international labour laws.”

Furthermore, Lawan said despite writing letters to the visitors of the universities and meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, over the “unhealthy development”, the crises had continued to linger on.
