Cristiano Ronaldo accepts two-year prison sentence

CRISTIANO RONALDO has accepted a two-year suspended prison sentence and will pay a whopping £16.9million fine after agreeing a deal over tax charges.

The Juventus superstar had been seeking an arrangement after pleading guilty to four charges of evasion between 2011 and 2014, worth a total of £13m

That amount has been reduced to £5m as part of the deal, but with costs and fines the figure Ronaldo has to cough up to settle the case is £16.9m.

Crucially, under Spanish law, he will not have to serve any time in prison because his sentence is noit more than two years.

A settlement was thought to have been reached for a while but it hinged on the new government in Spain accepting the terms..

The latest fine covers fees from authorities, fines and commission but he can now put the issue behind him.

Ronaldo, 33, was keen to reach a settlement with tax bosses as he gets his finances in order following his shock £99m move to Juventus earlier this month.

He had always fought the charges, but decided to reach an agreement to put them to bed as he starts a new life in Italy.

He becomes the latest football star to be sentenced for evading tax in Spain – an issue which has caught up with some of the biggest names in the game.

Last year his old rival Lionel Messi was sentenced to 21 months in prison along with his dad over £3.5m avoidance.

Like Ronaldo, under the terms of the deal the sentence was suspended meaning the Barcelona star did not have to go to prison.
His Barca team-mate Javier Mascherano also pleaded guilty to tax avoidance and was handed a one year sentence, suspended, in 2016.
